This year’s E3 was a blast and it’s hard to say who came out on top! Nintendo showed strong with lots of compelling Switch offerings like Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and of course, METROID PRIME 4! Microsoft was all about the 4K prowess and rendering power of the Scorpio, and Sony had some interesting titles to show off like Star Wars Battlefront II, the Life is Strange prequel from Square Enix and Shadow of the Colossus Remastered. So much to pick from, but here are my top 5!
Metroid Prime 4 (Switch) / Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS) –
It’s hard to say which I am more excited about, but needless to say both reveals sent up cheers all over the place! So many of the Metroid Titles since Prime 3 have been let downs. Other M, while visually decent and with some interesting gameplay additions, removed all awesomeness from Samus’ character and storyline and ruined the track record of compelling, immersive worlds that are unique and sync with ambient sound tracks and great music. That was all gone. Then we had Prime pinball and Federation Force on 3DS, which were laughable. We only got the title card and musical theme for Prime 4, but the very fact they are working on it is enough to give all Nintendo fans, old and new, hopeful arousal. Retro is not working on this title, so its comparability to others in the series is in question, but the Metroid Prime Series producer is heading the project, so I have high hopes. The studio behind him has not been named. We can hope to see it at the end of 2018.
Samus Returns is a full on 3DS re-imagining of the old Game Boy title, Metroid II Return of Samus, and wow that game was great. Interesting layouts, innovative new game play elements like the Spider Ball and Spring Ball and Plasma beam made the Battles against all the Metroid types awesome, as well as it was first time we saw Samus’ Gunship or got clues to her character with her saving the Metroid hatchling! And now that is all redone using the 3DS’s awesome graphics and gameplay design and art styles inspired by Prime and Other M! Plus, knowing Nintendo, there are sure to be new and interesting gameplay mechanics and imagery, music and surprises for us waiting in depths of SR388! The battle mechanic looks robust and acrobatic, taking the best of FPS and 3rd Person action. We can look forward to this gem in the fall of 2017!
Star Wars Battlefront II
This game looks better in its trailer than Episode VIII’s trailer does! And the gameplay demos look and play beautifully! Plus the story mode takes us through the story from an imperial POV, like the old TIE Fighter, and I’m all about that! If a game can make the battle of Naboo and Trade Federation droids seem cool, then it must be good! Looks like we get to play as any character we want, from Yoda to Darth Maul, even Rey and Kylo. From what the trailer and news shows, a lot of the multiplayer problems and mapping issues from the first have been solved, and the story of this campaign seems to be really well done. Can’t wait to see this one come to a galaxy close, close by this fall!
Kingdom Hearts III
Sora is back in this long awaited sequel and it looks as though gameplay elements have been massively upgraded! The key blade looks more versatile than ever from its showcase in the trailer, used as a gun, a magic wand and so much more. Many elements of the character action battle system seem to have been improved as well, taking much from FF XV and Bayonetta in terms of menus and button inputs. The story revolves around reviving Roxas from what I can tell, and who knows what that will bring? Plus all the Disney and Square Enix property you can handle of course! Drops in 2018 hopefully!
Call of Cthulhu
Everyone’s favorite eldritch horror is back in a new full length feature game that focuses on immersive and ambient environments, creating a sense of paranoia, helplessness and otherworldly-ness, and sticking to that good old Lovecraft lore! Seeing as how previous attempts at Cthulhu games have not been great (The best Lovecraft game (Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem [GC]) had no Lovecraft in it, but was inspired by the lore). This game looks to be hitting all the right marks as it makes its way to PC and consoles soon!
Shadow of the Colossus Remake
The timeless PS2 entry is getting a makeover, and though I am not one that usually touts the merits of remakes, this game deserved it and from what has been releases it looks absolutely gorgeous! All the greatness of the original with updated graphics, remastered sound, and most importantly, WAY BETTER CONTROLS AND HIT DETETCTION! (though one could argue that added to the original games challenge, but sometimes it was just too much). It is dropping on PS4 soon.!
